Summer Safety Tips for Your Baby
Watch as Parents tells you these summer safety tips for your baby! Keeping your baby protected during the summer months can become a unique balancing act as you try to cover her from harmful UV rays while still preventing overheating. If she’s overdressed, she could develop heat rash, and in some cases, overheating has been linked with sudden infant death syndrome. For maximum sun safety protection, apply sunscreen before you leave the house and every two hours, or whenever she gets wet or sweaty. When looking for sun protection in the form of sunscreen, look for one that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which can be used on infants of any age. Choose one that is waterproof and designed for kids that has an SPF of at least 15, and apply this beneath her clothes, as well. When considering sun protection clothing, dress your baby in light-colored pants, a light long-sleeved shirt, and a hat with a wide brim to protect her face. If you’re going to be indoors, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fibers like cotton are good choices. If your baby becomes distressed after being in the heat, her face is flushed and warm to the touch, or her breathing is rapid, she may be dehydrated. Infants under 6 months old shouldn’t drink water, so just nurse her more frequently or give her extra formula. If you notice your baby sweating a lot, she may be developing heat rash that can cluster on the neck, groin, back of the knees, or elbow creases. Alleviate the discomfort by changing her into loose clothing or just a diaper and applying corn starch or baby powder to the affected areas for maximum summer safety. Keep these summer safety tips in mind the next time you venture out into the heat so you both can enjoy the perks of the season!
